The Cistus ladaniferus , or Cistus ladaniferus L., is a plant remarkable for its resilience. Liking arid and dry soils, it flourishes in scrubland and garrigue, often alongside helichrysum. Its large flowers of varied hues and its capsule-shaped fruits are distinctive characteristics.

The word “kistos”, which gave its name to the Cistus , means “box” or “capsule” in Greek. A name that takes on its full meaning when we know the plant’s ability to resist flames thanks to its fireproof capsules.

Organic Cistus ladanifer essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the resinous branches. It releases an amber and balsamic aroma, reminiscent of the intensity of labdanum, a product formerly extracted from these same branches.

Known for its astringent and haemostatic properties, it was an ideal topical for burns, wounds and ulcers.

The Egyptians and Carthaginians used it to beautify the body and as a perfumed ointment. Although its medicinal use has gradually been abandoned, Cistus ladanifer is still a valuable element in perfumery.
